Hurdles to Overcome
As a student teacher, the biggest hurdle to overcome was my role within both the school site I was placed in as well as my role as a graduate student enrolled in a course. While I had wonderful advisors and a superb master teacher who became a lifelong mentor, there was still a lack of full control over my project. I was given ample time and space within the classroom, but there were still limitations on what would be best for the students as I was doing this project. Additionally, since I was performing this research project for a course, I was not the full CEO of my design. I understand that in a normal AR setting I would be under the guidance of a principal or fellow colleague, there was still a sense of what I could or couldn’t do in regards to topic or execution of my project.
Another hurdle I was face with was the lack of time within the classroom, both for the project and overall as a student teacher. As it worked in the best interest to only use some of the students, I could only pull the students out for a short period of time to work on this project. In a full-scale setting it might have been easier to incorporate the whole class as to not potentially let some of the students fall behind. Additionally, I was only in the classroom for half the year. It would be interesting to see the project play out if I had more time or access to the students and see how their learning continued overtime. Results could change if I was able to monitor long-term effects of teaching to conceptual and procedural ability.
Lastly, I had to work with a small sample size of students for my project. I never worked with a full class size of students. It might have been possible to obtain more accurate results if the sample size of the class was larger and I had more access to different types of student work. As a teacher, it would be interesting to see the effects of this project with a full-size class.
